Live Loops blurs the lines between the studio and stage, Master its machinations and you might find that Logic Pro X is the perfect tool for your modern production and performance needs.

Our starting point is basic arrangement in the Tracks area. To prepare the project, edit the audio regions so that they all fit within the structure of the song as defined by the markers Intro, Verse, etc. The screen is now divided into two zones, one for the Live Loops grid, the other for the Tracks Area. Click the top of the divider to ensure that the Live Loops grid is active. Move the first three audio regions on the next track to the Live Loops grid.

They should now populate the first three cells. You can click any loop to play it but only one loop will play from each track. Populate the rest of the grid, working on the basis that the structure of the song Intro, Verse, etc is mirrored in the columns of the grid, which, in the world of Live Loops, are called scenes.

You can trigger scenes using the arrows at the bottom, triggering all the loops associated with that scene. The best way to trigger different scenes and cells within the project is to use Logic Remote on an iPad or iPhone, as the multi-touch interface makes it easier to trigger multiple loops at the same time.

The Remix FX plug-in, which can be opened as a plug-in across the main stereo bus or activated via the Logic Remote app, lets you apply various DJ-like treatments across the main output of the mix. Cells work much the same as regions — you can record into them and edit the information they contain. Try editing one of the MIDI regions by double-clicking on it and doubling some of the notes. If your material is all locked to the same tempo, therefore, and you have no intention of changing it, consider deactivating the Flex and Follow option via the Cell Inspector.

Click and drag to choose the best sections of each take to create a seamless comp, complete with transition-smoothing crossfades.

Save multiple comps and switch among them to pick the one you like best. Consolidate multiple related tracks into a single track. Use a Summing Stack as a quick way to create submixes. Or create layered and split instruments. Create alternate versions of a track or multiple grouped tracks, and switch between them at any time to audition different options.

Create, store, and select from different edits and arrangements of track regions to make it easier to experiment with various creative ideas.

Load any version to make changes without compromising your original. Assign any selection of channels to a track group, then control the levels or other parameters of all tracks in the group from any single channel in the group. Easily capture changes to any channel strip or plug-in parameter.

Just enable automation, press Play, and make your changes. Make your songs and other audio productions sound their best with a complete collection of dynamics processors, EQs, and other production effects. Use built-in Logic Pro plug-ins or any third-party Audio Unit effects to directly and permanently render effects in any portion of an audio file, or to multiple files at once. Transform MIDI performances into music notation in real time as you play, creating perfectly readable notation even from a performance that may be less than perfect.

I am running into a problem where Ableton is indeed overkill and a bit too long winded for basic playback. Thank you. You would use the IAC driver in AudioMidi setup to route midi from numerology to mainstage basically.

Numerology can be your \’sequencing timeline\’ and mainstage the \’workstation\’ that you\’re \’sequencing\’ more or less. I know Logic 9 is stable for live with MBP. Maybe it\’s just the matter of time since it\’s newer. I think it should be stable too. Would be great if mainstage had a timeline.. Seems kind of a obvious thing to leave out but I guess that\’s one of the main reasons it can differentiate its self from other programs..

Just thought I\’d share experiences of using Logic 9 live. I produce all my tracks in Logic so wanted to use a familiar DAW for my live sets. What I do is bounce everything I can down to a single backing track and have one, sometimes two input tracks with FX etc on for playing guitar live. I use live mode because it\’s less of a drag on the CPU, you lose out on stuff like amp modelling.

Changing projects is an issue, so I use OnStage to open and close projects, ignoring the save project dialogue, via \’program change\’ midi commands. I don\’t have a midi controller that does this, so I use the notes on my Akai keyboard, routed into midi pipe, which are then converted to program change commands, which are then fed in Onstage – convoluted but it works.

I use Logic in 32 bit mode because when I used 64 bit mode the 64bit bridge thingy kept crashing – I\’ve had no issues in 32 bit mode though. I also run Resolume alongside all this for visuals, with a midi track in Logic routed out through the IAC bus to trigger visuals in Resolume.

All this sounds like a recipe for disaster but it all runs surprising well on my MBP. There are a couple of things I\’ve found which affect performance, like if you have a midi track selected, regardless if you\’re playing a virtual instrument live or not, the CPU maxes out – so best to have an audio track selected instead.

Anyway, bit late to the party here – hopefully this will be of some use to somebody out there! I use Logic X live all the time. No probs whatsoever. In fact, I think it\’s brilliant.

Nonsense on Logic being unreliable for live use. I\’ve used it exclusively since to run some pretty major concert tours, and it has been essentially bullet proof. For the last 10 years or so, I have used it exclusively for all my sounds as well, all while playing stems from Logic and even sending time code for video at times.

Mainstage is definitely cool for an advanced synth rig, but you can do just about anything in Logic\’s environment as well. Go for it. That\’s strange that you heard LPX is not stable for live. I have also been a logic user for over a decade and I find MS to be the unreliable one. Logic is solid. Kylo Marx. I\’ll pre record my tracks and most likely make a custom playlist in iTunes. Essentially I\’ll have a karaoke style recording where I will simply play my rhythm guitar and sing lead vocals.

Asides from using my expression pedal. Just thought I\’d write something seeing as I haven\’t yet.
